খ্রীষ্টীয় দ্বাদশ শতাব্দীতে স্থাপিত Saint Giles Cathedral স্কটল্যান্ড এর একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ খ্রীষ্ট ধর্মীয় প্রতিষ্ঠান। এটি গড়ে উঠেছিল ক্যাথলিক চার্চ হিসেবে। খ্রীষ্ট ধর্মীয় বিশ্বাসের ইতিহাসে প্রোটেস্ট্যান্ট ও ক্যাথলিক চর্চাকারীদের প্রচন্ড দ্বন্দ্ব ও সংঘাতের ইতিহাস জুড়ে আছে। ১৫৫৯ সালে John Knox এর নেতৃত্বে এটি প্রোটেস্ট্যান্ট চার্চে রুপান্তরিত হয়। গত ৯০০ বছরে এটি বেশ কয়েকবার সংস্কার করা হয়। খ্রিষ্ট ধর্মীয় মিথ, বিশ্বাস ও শিল্পীদের কল্পনার সব রং মিলে মিশে এর বহিরাবরণে ও অভ্যন্তরীণ সজ্জা অসাধারণ নান্দনিক একটি স্থাপনার রুপ দিয়েছে। অপরাপর অনেক চার্চের মতই এতে ধর্ম ও বিশ্বাস নির্বিশেষে সকলের প্রবেশের সুযোগ রয়েছে। শতাব্দীর পর শতাব্দী ধরে এর রুপের নবায়ন ঘটেছে। এডিনবারা’র ওল্ড টাউনে এটি একটি ল্যান্ড মার্ক স্থাপনা। এটির নিয়ন্ত্রণ, আচার, আচরণ ও বিশ্বাসের সংঘাতে এখানে ঘটেছে রক্তাক্ত সংঘাত। বস্তুত প্রোটেস্ট্যান্ট বিশ্বাসীদের দমন নিপীড়নের মধ্য দিয়ে দমনের চেষ্টায় কয়েক শত বিশ্বাসী প্রোটেস্ট্যান্টের মৃত্যুর ইতিহাস রয়েছে এডিনবারা’য়। যাঁদের স্মৃতি স্মারক দেখার সুযোগ মিলেছে গতকাল। এ চার্চের অভ্যন্তরে মধ্যযুগের শৈল্পিক সৌন্দর্য ভাষায় প্রকাশের জন্য যোগ্যতা আমার নেই। কালের পরিক্রমায় বর্তমানে এটা Presbyterian Church হিসেবে প্রতিষ্ঠিত। এ চার্চের একটি স্থানে অতি চমৎকার ও মানবিক একটা কবিতা ঠাই পেয়েছে। আগ্রহীদের জন্য কবিতাটি দিয়ে দিলাম।
